DEWA: how billing works and what's actually on your bill
Your DEWA bill includes electricity, water, sewerage, the Housing Fee, and a few small charges. Here's what each one is.
A DEWA bill is more than electricity and water. Several charges ride along on the same statement.
The main components
- Electricity — usage in kWh, billed in tiered slabs. The more you use, the higher the per-kWh rate.
- Water — billed in gallons, similar tiered structure.
- Sewerage charge — a small percentage of your water bill, paid to Dubai Municipality.
- Fuel surcharge — a per-kWh adjustment that fluctuates with global fuel prices.
- Housing Fee — 5% of your annual rent (tenants) or property value (owners), divided over 12 months. See the dedicated FAQ.
Reading the bill
Open the DEWA app or the smart meter portal. The bill breaks down each component. You can also see your hourly consumption — useful for spotting AC running away with your bill.
Payment
- Direct debit is available (and convenient).
- Late fees apply after the due date.
- If unpaid for too long, DEWA can disconnect — re-activation requires settling the balance plus a fee.
