Getting started in your home Updated May 2026

Why your Emirates ID comes first

Almost every other step — tenancy, utilities, banking — depends on your Emirates ID being issued first.

The Emirates ID is the residency card every UAE resident carries. It's also the gate that unlocks almost everything else you need to set up a home here.

What it gates

  • Tenancy & Ejari — landlords and Ejari registration require your Emirates ID number.
  • DEWA activation needs your Emirates ID (or a passport copy until the card is ready).
  • Bank accounts — most banks won't open a salary account without the card.
  • Mobile postpaid lines and many delivery / e-commerce setups also ask for it.

How to get it

Once your residence visa is stamped, the ICP (Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security) issues the card. Most employers handle this for you. If you're on a self-sponsored visa, apply via the ICP portal or a typing centre.

Until the physical card arrives, you can show the application receipt or the digital ID in the UAE Pass app — that's accepted in most places.

Sources: ICP, common practice across DEWA / banks / landlords.
